Rime Mahdi is a Documentary Practitioner and Academic.

Born in London, UK, to North African-Italian heritage, Rime Mahdi has spent the past nine years working as a freelance Self-Shooting Producer/Director and Editor, specialising in documentary practice. In 2023, she was awarded a full tuition scholarship from the Aziz Foundation to pursue an MFA in Creative Documentary Practice at University College London.

Alongside her freelance work, Rime has held academic roles, including Course Director for the new BA (Hons) Media Production programme at London South Bank University, as well as Lecturer in Creative Technologies. Her practice-based research explores innovative uses of the documentary form to ethnographically examine intersectional identities and advocate for marginalised communities.

She is currently working on her graduate dissertation film, which delves into themes of Algerian male exile and migration through a portrait of her cousin, Flenn—a pioneer of Algerian rap with a significant online following of over 3 million. His work reflects the complexities of Algeria’s post-colonial landscape.

Rime’s research interests include emerging creative technologies, interactive and immersive non-fiction practices, speculative documentary, and ethnography. She aims to further these explorations through a PhD, with a focus on the globalised media landscape and evolving audience trends.
